MNYS Synodical Diaconate

  1. Application
    1. Completion and submission of Application
    2. Initial interview with Synod Diaconate Council (SDC)
    3. Completion of candidacy pre-work
      1. autobiography and theological essay
      2. submission of relevant education materials
      3. psychological evaluation
      4. other pre-work as recommended by SDC
    4. Completion and submission of Internship Proposal and Learning Agreement
    5. Endorsement of application and internship by SDC
    6. Assignment of SDC members to assist candidate

  2. Internship
    1. Congregation support group formed
    2. Internship begins (9-12 months)
    3. Interim evaluations by candidate, supervisor, support group
    4. Interim progress conference with SDC; adjustments made as needed
    5. Final evaluations by candidate, supervisor, support group

  3. Approval
    1. Approval interview by SDC; candidate brings — completed final evaluations
    2. Approval of candidate by SDC; recommendation forwarded to bishop.
    3. Bishop endorses SDC recommendation.

    4. Call Process
      1. Congregation council makes call recommendation
      2. Letter of Call and call description presented to congregation at properly called meeting; vote
      3. Call by congregation forwarded to SDC

  4. Rostering
    1. Rite of setting apart (synod-wide event)
    2. Installation at calling congregation/agency

  5. Ongoing Participation in Synodical Diaconate
    1. Annual report to bishop
    2. Attend at SD continuing educational events
    3. Regular collegial and supervisory conferences
    4. Annual review and renewal of Call by congregation (as per ELCA by-laws)
